Problem
Create a series of animations that illustrate the different stages of the patient journey, explain what patients can expect, describe the functions of various hospital areas, outline available services, and showcase the types of equipment used.
Audience
Patient, parents and visitors to the Peter McCallum Cancer Centre
Solution
Created two in-depth animated motion graphic videos showcasing the services provided for patients, parents, and visitors at the Youth Cancer and Wellbeing Centres at PMCC.
Project Constraints
Strict Deadlines
Had 12 Weeks to finish this project with strict deadlines in place for check-ins throughout the project.
Research
Design Inspiration
Created multiple moodboard's that focused in on different forms of both animation and illustration. Which served as primary inspiration for the art style of the project.
Storyboards
I created basic entry storyboards for one of the videos to help get the initial ideas flowing. This process also helped identify concepts we liked enough to start refining into the final product.
Ideate
Background
As our group progressed through the creative process, I used Photoshop to create a range of potential background options. This helped us better visualize how the final product might look.
Initial Styleframes
Created style frames to evaluate the development of our visual style and assess how the new backgrounds integrated with the overall design.
Wireframe + Animatic
Our team included talented artists who provided refined wireframes and storyboards. This allowed me to assemble an animatic that we used to update our client and key stakeholders on the project’s progress.
Refined Styleframes
After many group discussions and idea sessions, we finalized our visual identity and refined the earlier style frames. To improve clarity, we increased the contrast of the characters against the backgrounds by adding thicker lines to key areas. We also introduced long, sweeping lines in the background that act as subtle guides, leading the viewer through each scene.
Background Animation
Once our visual style was finalised, I created an After Effects asset for the moving lines in the background. This allowed the team to easily insert the animation into their projects, ensuring consistency across all files.
Character Rigging
In the final stages of this project, I decided to learn how to rig a character in After Effects. Using the Duik Bassel plugin made the process straightforward and enjoyable, adding a valuable new skill during a busy and challenging period.

Final Animations
Below are the two full animations created by our Group for the Peter McCallum Cancer Centre. With the two main Focus’s being the Youth Cancer Centre and the Wellbeing Centre.
Reflections
1.
I improved my After Effects skills and learned new techniques such as character rigging using the Duik Bassel plugin.
2.
I mastered the basics of After Effects, building a strong foundation for motion design work.
3.
Working on this project during the pandemic presented unique challenges for team collaboration. It taught me valuable lessons in overcoming obstacles and adapting to remote teamwork.
